What does bioidentical hormone therapy actually mean?

Bioidentical means the hormone is structurally identical to the one your body makes. It describes the molecule, not the manufacturer and not the quality — many FDA-approved products are bioidentical. It is a useful word for what something is, and a poor one for judging whether a particular therapy is right for you.

The term has been marketed hard enough that it has come to imply "natural" or "safer", and neither is what it means. Bioidentical estradiol is estradiol whether it arrives from a large pharmaceutical manufacturer or a compounding pharmacy.

What actually matters in a hormone plan is which hormones you need, in what form, by what route, at what point in your own physiology, and how closely it is followed afterwards. Those decisions are individual, and they are the consult — not something anybody can responsibly write down for a stranger on a webpage.

What I will say generally: therapy should be built on a full picture rather than one number, it should be monitored and adjusted rather than set and forgotten, and it should be a decision you understand well enough to explain back to me.
