Do women need testosterone?
Women produce testosterone throughout life, and it plays an important role in energy, muscle mass, mood, cognition, motivation and libido. It is often thought of as a male hormone, but women make it, use it, and absolutely notice when levels begin to decline.
Clinically, I am seeing signs of declining testosterone in women as early as their early thirties. Symptoms can include decreased energy, lower motivation, reduced strength or muscle tone, changes in body composition, lower libido, mood changes, and brain fog.
What I hear most often is not necessarily "my libido is low." It is more often a sense of feeling flat — motivation is not what it used to be, workouts are not producing the same results, mental clarity feels off, or that natural drive and vitality just are not there any more.
Testosterone is also frequently left out of hormone testing altogether, which means a woman can be told she had a "complete" hormone panel when an important part of the picture was never evaluated.
I prefer to assess testosterone alongside the rest of the hormone and metabolic picture rather than in isolation. Whether treatment is appropriate depends on your symptoms, your labs, your medical history, your goals, and how all of it fits together.
